Angel in the House (2022) was a site-specific installation at Galerie Noord in Groningen. After winning their yearly art salon, I transformed the gallery space into the interior of an alter-ego inspired by the archetypical housewife, living approximately 100 years ago. Like me, she’s 28 years old, solitary, modest and highly conscious of how she presents herself to the outside world. Through projected films, pastel drawings, vintage furniture and performance, the Angel’s presence was suggested within the installation.

Looking back on the past reveals how much has changed within a relatively short period, but also how outdated ideals still permeate into contemporary society. With this project I aimed to honour my foremothers who, as women, didn’t have the same liberties as I do now.
